This morning I opened the lid to quite a suprise!

Close up of the mass of whatever.

Using a small nail I “sliced” open one of the masses, gooie inside.

5 minutes later it seems to be bleeding.

It’s only growing on top newspaper bedding. I have found it in the leaf and cardboard mixed bedding too.

I removed all of the newspaper and any signs of the yellow growth. Old carpet will be used to cover the top until I can tell what’s going on.
Hi Jim! Long time no hear!
I harvested the first chunk of worm castings from the worms I got from you just a couple days ago. So exciting. I’m going to give it to my Brandywines and Mortgage Lifter heirloom ‘maters once I get a truck-full of compost from Vollmecke Orchards next week for my new raised beds.
I noticed that I have the same yellow stuff growing in the top drawer of my stackable worm bin. I thought it be the digested glue from the cardboard strips I’ve been putting in there, but now that I read your post, I’m afraid it must be the same sort of growth.
Could it be a combo of some kind of pollen in the air and the hot weather?
I hope all is well otherwise!
Amy
The yellow goo, I’m wondering if this can be yeast? I have also heard that soy is now used to make newspaper ink and soy flour is yellow so I’m just wondering if it could be somehow related there as well. It would be fun to get your local school’s biology teacher involved and give them a sample of this ‘mold/fungus’ growth and have it identified. But back to the yeast, we used to put our bread starter outside to ‘catch the wild yeast’ that is in the air. Do you have any other sources of starch/bread that is going into the bins? Just my thoughts, cheers, Bonnie
Hi Bonnie,
I’ve come to learn its called Slime Mold. Comes from the leaves. I’ve stopped using leaves indoors and haven’t had a problem since.
Thanks,
Jim
